Playa de la Llana

Playa de la Llana

Playa de las Salinas, Playa de Barraca Quemada and Playa de Punta de Algas are the three Mediterranean beaches that make up the so-called Playas de La Llana. The first of these, Playa de las Salinas, has more than a kilometre of fine sand, and is the one with the greatest influx in summer.

As for Barraca Quemada Beach, its most striking feature is the large number of palm trees it has, which act as natural umbrellas to shelter from the sun. It can be accessed by crossing the Playa de las Salinas, starting from the car parks of Puerto de San Pedro.

Finally, Punta de Algas Beach deserves a special mention, as from it you can see both the Mediterranean Sea and the Mar Menor, which melt their waters here. In addition, this beach is one of the last places where you can see the ancient fishing art of the encañizada, which consists of putting the rods in an upright position and stuck in the bottom, creating a kind of labyrinth in the area where the fish pass from one sea to another.

Las Charcas Mud Baths

Las Charcas Mud Baths

The biggest outdoor mud therapy sight in Europe can be found in San Pedro del Pinatar.

This area is called Las Charcas, and in this area there are specially constructed mud bathing stations for those visiting and using the Banos de Lodo, baths of mud. Las Charcas lies within the Parque Natural de Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar, and is separated from the Mar Menor by a thin strip of land which is paved and offers some degree of shade.

The therapeutic properties of mud have been known since antiquity and used in both medical and beauty treatments for thousands of years. Special climatic conditions in the Mar Menor, and the surrounding Salinas, have brought about clay deposits which contain a high percentage of positive ions, calcium, magnesium, potassium and fluoride, in addition to negative ions, chlorine and sulphate, which combine with extraordinarily fine sand to create a unique, healing mud.

The mud is fine and silky, charged with minerals and nutrients, and bathers simply coat themselves in the mud before walking out of the water and onto the paved area or beaches opposite to dry off. It is always advisable to test the mud on a small patch of skin if this is the first time enjoying a mud bath, as occasionally a reaction can be encountered.

Local legend says that in order for the maximum benefit to be obtained from the treatment, bathers should coat themselves in mud, then walk 3 km down to the Molino de la Calcetera, before washing off the mud in the same place from which it was obtained, never in the Mar Menor itself. They advise that this procedure should be carried out at least 9 times during the holiday break, and that if bathers are unable to complete 9 visits, they must ensure that the number of visits ends in an odd number!

Parque Regional Salinas

Parque Regional Salinas

The Parque Regional Salinas is the most important wetland in the region of Murcia

The most appropriate time to visit is spring and autumn, although it is at the end of July when the highest concentration of flamingos occurs.

The Regional Park of the Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro extends for 6 kilometres, along the Mediterranean coast of Murcia, between the towns of San Pedro del Pinatar and San Javier. It is a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA), as every year it becomes a place of passage for flocks of flamingos and other migratory birds.

It is a unique place because, in a small area of territory, it is possible to discover natural formations as varied as salt flats, dunes, beaches, reedbeds or pine forests. For example, the dunes of the beach of the Demolished Tower, with their more than three meters high, are particularly striking.

Museo Municipal Palacio Baron de Benifayo o La Casa de la Rusa

Archaeology: The museum offers a sample of the main archaeological finds of the municipality, both terrestrial (La Raya) and underwater (Punta de Algas, San Ferreol, La Barra and El Mojón), as well as a selection of fossils and material from prehistoric cultures of the southeast. Along with the material described, there are a series of explanatory panels and models, didactic and entertaining, which inform the visitor of the most significant data of the pieces on display.

Ethnography: This section is dedicated on the one hand to the bourgeoisie that settled in San Pedro del Pinatar at the end of the nineteenth century, building their summer residences and participating in the social life of the time, and on the other hand to the ordinary people, who with their work and effort managed to raise the municipality and bring it to the current levels. Some of the main trades that were the engine of the economy of the time are represented: fishing, agriculture, salting and salting.

Antique Toy Collection: More than 300 old toys, given or donated by collaborators, can be seen. A journey is made through the history of the toy, from the oldest slingshots, marbles and trunks, to the first computer video games.

Festivities of the Virgen del Carmen

Festivities of the Virgen del Carmen

The Fiestas de la Virgen del Carmen are traditional seafaring festivals that are held every year on July 16 in San Pedro del Pinatar and pay homage to the patron saint of the city. Since 1965 it has been declared a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest in the Region of Murcia.

Since 1792 the pilgrimage and its promenade of the image of the Virgin have been known, but the festivities as such have been celebrated since 1892. It consists of a land pilgrimage and a tour of the Mar Menor. It begins at the Church of San Pedro Apóstol towards the hamlet of Lo Pagán where the image of the Virgin is embarked and a maritime tour is made. After disembarking, a mass is celebrated in the open air and then the image of the Virgin is transferred to the church of the district, where it remains throughout the day for its visit.

After the mass, festive activities begin that include popular gastronomic preparations such as the caldero del Mar Menor, which is a rice made by fishermen with fish from the area.

Around midnight and after some fireworks, a return procession begins that arrives at dawn at the church of San Pedro Apóstol where a Salve Marinera is usually sung.

Holy Week In San Pedro del Pinatar

Holy Week In San Pedro del Pinatar

The Mar Menor celebrates its Holy Week with seafaring processions on the coast of Lo Pagán and San Pedro del Pinatar. The efforts of the costaleros, the cry of promise, the smell of flowers and the sound of the drum and bugle awaken feelings that are difficult to explain in visitors.

Sal Music Festival

Sal Music Festival

Sal de Música, held in mid-August each year, is an event organized by the City Council of San Pedro del Pinatar, which began in 2021 with the aim of increasing the tourist attraction of the municipality, diversifying the portfolio of events and cultural programming that San Pedro del Pinatar offers to visitors.

This event has brought together artists of very high national recognition in San Pedro del Pinatar in its previous editions, which has been an important boost to the economic activity during its celebration, with thousands of spectators.

The origin of the visitors also endorses this commitment. "People come from all over Spain. In the last edition, more than 50% of the tickets sold were from outside the Region. A lot of people came even from the islands, which is always more complicated. It is a commitment to festival tourism. First of all, you come to the festival, which is what interests you. In addition, you know the municipality that you will surely be enchanted," says the Councilor for Tourism.
