Abarán
In the Valle de Ricote, between mountains and fruit groves, lies the town of Abarán.
Although archaeological remains from the Bronze Age exist, the most important information about this town dates back to the reconquest, under the Order of Saint James, when, after suffering a significant drop in population, Moorish families from Hellín repopulated this area.
Abarán's beauty is complete once one has seen the water wheels, many of them still in working order. The route along which they are visited enables us to appreciate the irrigation system which our ancestors put to such good use. The traditions and beauty of the Valle de Ricote are among the other principal attractions of this town.
Among the most outstanding of its buildings are: the Church of San Pablo, from the 16th century; the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora del Oro, which is to be found in the hills which bear that very name; and the Hermitage of the Santos Médicos -Holy Doctors-, the patron saints of the town. The walk up to the Hermitage is a must for any traveller who wishes to enjoy a beautiful view of the valley and the Sierra del Oro, a natural beauty spot which Abarán shares with other towns in the surrounding area.

Archena
Watered by the river Segura, Archena is a fertile agricultural settlement at the lower end of the Ricote valley. Considered as the region's oasis, views are dominated by the rugged nearby mountains.
Its excellent spa baths, in use since Roman times, rounds off Archena's charm. The waters that spring from the ground at 50ºC have healing properties and can be experience at leisure in the spa complex which offers a wide range of other services. The church dedicated to La Virgen de la Salud (Our Lady of Good Health), the patron saint of Archena, stands within the grounds of the spa complex and is also one of the town's visitor attractions.
The history of Archena dates from Iberian times and it has archaeological remains including the Warriors Vase, now in the National Archaeological Museum. Many historians place the origins of Archena in 234 BC, during Carthaginian control of the area. The present site, however, is of Roman Origin as is the name for the town. After the Reconquest Archena passed into the hands of the Order of St John the Baptist until the 19th century, evidence of which is to be found in the church dedicated to the saint.

Blanca
Right in the heart of the Ricote Valley, on the banks of the River Segura, lies Blanca, known to our ancestors as La Negra or "The Black", due to the colour of the mountain where it lies.
The castle which reigns over the town was built by the Moslems in the twelfth century; before it lies the valley in all its splendour. It can be reached by setting out from the old quarter where the traveller can get to know the ancient mediaeval layout of the town and, at the same time, the warmth of its people.
Outstanding among its buildings are the Church of St. John the Evangelist, from the sixteenth century; the Hermitage of Saint Roque with its Baroque style; the Favorita ("Favourite") House, built in an eclectic style during the nineteenth century; the Count's house, a faithful example of nineteenth century neoclassicism, now turned into the Hostería Conde de la Vallesa; and last, but not least, the Victoria Theatre, which has recently reopened its doors after a period of restoration.
The Fundación Pedro Cano -Pedro Cano Foundation- is a must: its location is great, since it is in an extraordinary building on the bank of the River Segura; it houses some of the best works of Pedro Cano, the artist from Blanca. In addition, it has temporary exhibition rooms, workshop rooms, a library and an auditorium.
The Centro de Interpretación de la Luz y el Agua is also very interesting for the visitor, since it shows the ways of exploitation of water through history in this locality. Blanca, where natural beauty and historical tradition meet to offer the traveller the chance to enjoy an adventurous type of tourism which includes a descent of the River Segura, hiking and pony trekking among others.

Cieza
Cieza, in every street, path, garden or mountain displays its beauty, by opening up the traveller's appreciation of the senses. Its Palaeolithic and Neolithic remains are unique in the whole Mediterranean fringe and its examples of cave paintings have been declared World Heritage by UNESCO.
Cieza offers the chance to not only appreciate its culture but also to enjoy the risks of Nature. Near this town we can found one of the most remarkable natural beauty spots, the Almadenes Canyon, formed by the River Segura as it narrows creating a gorge with walls hundreds of metres high, which is ideal for practising adventure sports.
The Iberians and Moslems also left their mark, the latter in the archaeological collection of Medina Siyasa. Evidence of these cultures are preserved in the Museum of Siyasa.
Other outstanding monuments are the Church of the Assumption from the eighteenth century; the Church of St. Joaquin, built in the seventeenth century; the Convent Church of the Clarissas, dating back to the eighteenth; the Hermitage of the St. Cristo del Consuelo (Holy Christ of Solace), with its Neogothic-Mudejar style, and last, but not least, the Hermitage of the Buen Suceso. Its artistic heritage is completed by the Balcon del Muro, a historical centre which consists of the ancient fifteenth century fort and the nineteenth century wall.

Ojós
Ojós, from the Arabic meaning orchards sits on a grey hillside on the banks of the Segura amid fertile orchards. Ojós conserves an old-fashioned atmosphere; the town itself is small, it has kept alive many old traditions and crafts and seems to hum along to the banter of children playing in the street and the clatter of busy kitchens!
One of Ulea's most interesting buildings is the Mudéjar-style church of St Augustine, the town's patron. Also worth taking a look at are the mansions still displaying the heraldic crests of former noble families. Not far away is the Azud de Ojós reservoir and El Solvente, a place worth a visit for its natural beauty and streams. Ojós is also famous for its bizcocho borracho, a kind of sponge cake steeped in liqueurs.

Ricote
The ancient stronghold of Ricote, or Alarbona to the Moors, is a quiet town set in fertile huerta and chalky sandstone hills where the vines that produce the rich, dark local wines are grown.
Ricote was the last Morisco area of the Spanish Levant, and the last Mudéjares of the Kingdom of Murcia lived here until their expulsion in 1614, after which the Order of St James took charge of repopulating the area.
The town's charm is self-evident, with its ancient stately houses bearing the shields of noble families above the doorways, the 18th-century church of San Sebastián, home to numerous works of art including a priceless restored organ and a statue of St Joseph sculpted by Salzillo. Also of interest is the Casa Palacio of the Order of St James or Llamas, in Baroque style with elaborately worked window grills. The Sierra de Ricote, whose highest point is the Pico de Almeces (1,124 m) and the Sierra de la Bermeja support extensive pine forests that regularly attract adventure tourism and nature lovers.

Ulea
Ulea is a land of contrasts where the verdure of the Ricote valley stands out against the aridness of the surrounding mountains. Its Muslim heritage can be felt throughout the valley in things such as the steep and winding street layout, the murmur of water in the fountains, water wheels, Moorish water storage cellars and the hubbub of folk going about their everyday business. Iberians and Romans settled here, but it was under Muslim rule that the present character of the tow was established. Like neighbouring towns it was given to the Order of St James and stayed in their possession until the middle of the 19th century.
Places of interest are the church of San Bartolomé , built between the 12th and 15th centuries, La Pila de la Reina Mora, and the Plaza del Henchidor, where the relic of Christ's cross, 'La Vera Cruz' is bathed every May 3.
Ulea, then, is a charming district where the river Segura is fast flowing and palm trees dotting its fertile 'huerta' give it a certain Eastern feel.

Villanueva del Río Segura
This agricultural community just a stone's throw away from Archena and Ulea is principally a fruit-growing area. Settled by the Romans in the 4thC BC, the character of the present town was moulded under Arab rule and finally converted to Christianity after the fall of Granada in 1492.
Villanueva's charm owes much to the aromas of the valley perfuming its streets and the refreshing waters of its summer baths, all another part of the charm of the Ricote valley
The Morisco element in the population inevitably followed the fate of their kin in the rest of the Ricote valley Places of note are the church in the Plaza Mayor, dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption (Nuestra Señora de la Asunción), patroness of the town. It was built during the 19th century, following a neoclassical style by Juan de Villanueva. The Statue of the Sacred Heart atop the mountain affords fine views of the valley, and there is also El Golgo, a former electricity generator now used for fishing and summer bathing.

Cave-Chasm of La Serreta
The Serreta Cave-Chasm is located in the Almadenes Canyon Protected Natural Area. The Segura River runs through this canyon, encased between vertical walls that in some sections reach 100 meters in height. The nature of the environment has given rise to a large concentration of caves, chasms and shelters that were used by prehistoric man as shelters.
There are three main elements that make this cave one of the most unique archaeological sites in Murcia. On the one hand, the spectacular nature of its location, in the heart of the Almaderes Canyon, and from whose interior balcony you can enjoy one of the best views of the Segura River as it passes through the Region of Murcia. On the other hand, the existence of the remains of a Roman habitat inside, being the only one documented so far inside a cave in the entire Iberian Peninsula. And finally, the discovery of two panels of well-preserved rock art paintings, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
Those who visit the cave-chasm of La Serreta are amazed by the spectacular landscape, and pleasantly surprised to discover inside one of the most significant stations with rock art in the Region of Murcia.

Islamic site of Siyâsa
Siyâsa is the Islamic site that best allows us to learn about the urban development, the domestic structure and the ornamental decorative elements of the Andalusian cities, becoming a magnificent example of the residential architecture of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
The guided tour of the site offers the opportunity to see some of the houses in situ. In Siyâsa they respond to the Islamic model called "central courtyard house", from which the different rooms of the house are accessed. Around the courtyard are the various rooms that make up the structure of the Andalusian habitat.
Walking through the narrow and narrow streets, discovering the original structures of the Andalusian domestic habitat, or contemplating the splendid landscape that can be seen from the old site, are more than attractive elements to visit this important site.

One of the most notable and long-lived attractions in the Vega Alta del Segura region is the Abarán Ferris wheel, which is considered one of the largest in Europe. Originally built in 1805 by Francisco Libián, this Ferris wheel has become an emblematic monument that supplies water to the main irrigation ditch that feeds the vegetable crops. The wooden structure was rebuilt in 1915 due to its deterioration, with cast iron gears supporting it.
With a size of 11.90 meters long and 1.20 meters wide, the Ferris wheel of Abarán is one of the must-see stops on the famous "Route of the Ferris Wheels", which includes four other equally impressive Ferris wheels in Abarán.
