Playa de Percheles

Playa de Percheles

A stunning, crescent shaped, sandy beach, Percheles is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful beaches in Murcia.

Over the last few years there have been access and paid parking issues but, in January 2024, the Spanish Courts gave Mazarrón Council permission to take over the land and grant access to anyone wishing to visit.

As it is a bit out of the way, it isn't usually too busy, although it is popular with campers and motorhome owners.

Abandoned Mines of Mazarrón

Abandoned Mines of Mazarrón

Walking through the abandoned mines, you will find landscapes formed by extensive multi-coloured mining mountains, ruined buildings, and curious abandoned structures belonging to the history of mining dating back to Roman times.

Throughout history, iron, lead, silver, copper, zinc, alum and almagra have been extracted from these mines.

The activity in the region was mainly of the underground type, which is why it is common to find holes and cavities up to 500 meters deep along the route. It should be noted that the area is unsupervised and care must be taken. The area is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues or children. There are no services, so it is advised to take water with you, as it can get very hot.

There is a car park off the main road just before entering Mazarrón town from the west, then quite a steep walk up a rutted track.

Inside, you will find audiovisual projections, graphic material, models and information panels on the history and culture of the Phoenicians linked to Mazarron. It also has a one-third-scale model of the “Mazarrón II” made with the same materials as the original ship and with a detailed history of the ship's discovery process and the archaeological work that was carried out. Only a few components of the ship named “Mazarrón I” were found, but the “Mazarrón II” is almost entirely complete and preserved in front of La Isla beach, which is where it was found.

Villa del Alamillo Archaeological Remains

Villa del Alamillo Archaeological Remains

In front of the Alamillo Beach this is a fascinating archaeological treasure of Roman heritage. From a Roman aqueduct to a residential village, you will find thermal baths and the important industrial part dedicated to the manufacture of salted fish and fish sauces that the Romans made in the region in ancient times.

One of the most fascinating finds is undoubtedly the Roman-Republican establishment, which is made up of several interconnected rooms, all articulated in front of a central courtyard. In contrast, there is also the Roman-imperial complex, which occupies a wide area of land and is made up of the remains of a water distribution basin with its corresponding aqueduct. This important hydraulic structure is from the first century BC, like the Roman villa, and it is believed that it would support volumes of water over 250,000 litres from springs.

In the Roman town of Alamillo, with its stepped terraces and hot springs, it is very easy to distinguish two well-differentiated sections: a residential area and an industrial or service area that was used mainly for the manufacture of salted fish.

Currently, a lot of these discoveries are protected to favour their conservation and only some of them can be visited by the general public.

Corazon de Jesus

Corazon de Jesus

Situated on the headland above the Puerto de Mazarrón marina, this incredible sculpture of Christ is located in the “Cabezo del Faro”, on Mount Santa Catalina, and is classified as the first statue of the Sacred Heart built within the Murcia region.

Although its original creation date was 1924, the monument was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War and was rebuilt thanks to the initiative of the neighbourhood council of the region. It was the residents of Mazarrón themselves who were in charge of gathering the necessary funds to carry out their restoration project, finally rebuilding it in 1952.

 Mazarron Big Guns

Mazarron Big Guns

This impressive gun battery was built to prevent enemy ships entering the bay to attack the important port and military arsenal at Cartagena.

The Bateria de Castillitos military buildings are extensive and were built in an ornate, crenelated style. However, the highlight of the visit are undoubtedly the massive 381mm guns, with the 17m long barrels each mounted in an enormous turret.

Please note that the drive up to the battery is narrow and winding and not for drivers of a nervous disposition. The site covers a large area and there are no services on-site, so it is advised to take water with you.
