Museo Paso Blanco

Museo Paso Blanco

The Monumental Complex of Santo Domingo (16th-18th centuries) is the headquarters of the Paso Blanco Embroidery Museum (muBBla) and houses the heritage of this brotherhood, the oldest in the city.

In this museum, the treasures of textile art of Paso Blanco are exhibited: embroidery made in silk and gold in the Virgen de la Amargura Workshops, among which six Assets of Cultural Interest that are preserved in the Chamber of Wonders under a sophisticated conservation program stand out.

Attached to the embroidery museum is the Chapel of the Rosary, the religious headquarters of Paso Blanco. Built between 1707 and 1740, it is a jewel of the regional Baroque. The dome of the Apotheosis of the Rosary, painted in fresco, and the main altarpiece, richly decorated in gold leaf, stand out for its exceptionality. When contemplating this altarpiece, the restoration to which was carried out in the lower body of the altarpiece is revealed, due to the damage suffered in the Civil War.

Open Monday to Saturday: 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Sunday: 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Among the pieces that can be seen in this museum are the black mantle of the Virgin of Los Dolores (1856) and the banners made in the first decades of the 20th century, declared Assets of Cultural Interest.

From the museum you have access to the Church of San Francisco, the religious headquarters of this brotherhood. The interior of the church stands out for the impressive Baroque altarpieces, the canvases of the painter Camacho, the eighteenth-century organ and the sculptural carvings that procession through the Paso Azul in the Holy Week of Lorca.

The Lovers Eyebrows

The Lovers Eyebrows

Legend has it that in the Middle Ages a Muslim soldier and a Christian lady fell in love and when they could not get married they decided to go up to the Cejo and seal their love there forever by falling from it.

This famous cliff in the City of the Sun is a vertical wall of eroded sandstone at the foot of which there is a channelled fountain that comes from an underground aquifer, and which rises to the surface naturally. In fact, this route is part of the longest Ecotourism Trail of the Via Augusta, so the road surface is conditioned and the route signposted at all times.

Located in the Sierra de la Peña Rubia, the trail starts from the Fuente de los Pilones, next to the Castle of Lorca, and crosses or fords different ravines until it reaches the Cejo. This easy hiking route is around 5 Kilometres each way.

Semana Santa

Semana Santa

The Biblical Passion Parades of Lorca are, without a doubt, one of the most original manifestations of the national and international geography of Holy Week.

This impressive religious, artistic, cultural and social celebration has been declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest since 2007 and some of the embroideries on display have been the first textiles to be declared Assets of Cultural Interest.

The processions of Friday of Sorrows, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are the best known and popular. These run along Juan Carlos I Avenue and the spectators seated in the boxes see the six Lorca brotherhoods pass in front of them. Whites and Blues cheer and cheer from their seats, handkerchiefs in hand, as they pass by, infecting everyone with their "vivas" and their passion while passages from the Old and New Testaments are staged in which thousands of extras participate.

Fiestas

Fiestas

The September Fair is the great annual event of recreation in Lorca. It is held every year around the third weekend of September, and for ten intense days, it fulfills a brilliant and unifying program in which events such as concerts, theater, street entertainment, fairground attractions, children's and senior citizen activities, exhibitions and, above all, offer for the participation of all are mixed.

A few days before, on the eighth of September, Lorca celebrates the so-called "small fair", in the Barrio de la Virgen de las Huertas, Patron Saint of the City. It is an annual event of devotion and festivity, near the sanctuary that bears the name of its owner.

Also worthy of mention is the Christmas Festivities programme, which includes the celebration of the Cuadrillas Meeting, and the traditional Three Kings Parade. Such as the Carnival activities, in which there is a multitudinous participation of carnival troupes and groups from different entities of Lorca. For San Clemente, Patron Saint of Lorca, around November 23, the saint's feast day, the Cultural Festive Federation that bears his name, organizes a program of events including the Medieval Market, and the Great Parade of Muslims, Jews and Christians.

Shopping

Shopping

There is a wide range of shopping options in Lorca, where the variety of establishments in the historic centre is complemented by more modern out-of-town facilities.

Browse through the numerous shops in the main Avenida Juan Carlos I, Calle Lope Gisbert and the pedestrian street of Calle Corredera. Of course retail is not confined to these three more or less parallel thoroughfares, and a multitude of shops both large and small can also be found on the smaller streets which connect them, although these streets do contain the principal retailers of the central city area.

Close to the RM-11 Lorca-Águilas motorway is the Parque Almenara. This is one of the largest retail and leisure malls in the south-west of Murcia and provides the full “all under one roof” shopping experience, complete with many well-known brands and shops on two easily accessed levels.

There are also larger retail units for electrical products and home and garden goods. Parque Almenara also provides a 10-pin bowling alley and entertainment complex, a multiscreen cinema showing the latest offerings from Hollywood and the best 3D movies, with English language films shown in their original version on Thursdays, and nine venues to grab a bite to eat.
